For eleven centuries, pilgrims and adventurers have trudged along the Way of St James, an 800-kilometre trek through northern Spain from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela, where legend has it that the saint’s remains were carried by boat from Jerusalem and buried.

English composer Joby Talbot’s 2005 musical account of this journey, 'Path of Miracles' for 17-part choir and crotales (bell-like cymbals), is a work that sounds at once both mediaeval and modern and is already being hailed as a 21st centurymasterpiece. Its magnificent opening movement, the 20-minute 'Roncesvalles', is the centrepiece of our first concert, set appropriately in the beautiful and acoustically superb Romanesque church of St Michael’s, Remuera.

In Quest we follow some of the journeys – physical, emotional and spiritual – that brave souls embark on, and we portray their triumphs and setbacks in dramatic choral music. Alongside spirituals, part songs and sacred works, we also reprise Eric Whitacre’s exciting 'Leonardo dreams of his flying machine', in which the great Renaissance inventor grapples with the challenge of human flight.
